Nigeria's Flamingos Soar into Quarterfinals with 4-0 Thrashing of Ecuador

Nigeria's U17 women's team, the Flamingos, continued their impressive run in the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup, securing a resounding 4-0 victory over Ecuador on Saturday night to book their spot in the quarterfinals.

The Flamingos, who finished third in the previous edition, have now accumulated six points from their first two matches, scoring eight goals and conceding only one. Their winning streak sets them up for a confident showdown against host nation Dominican Republic in the early hours of Wednesday Morning. (12AM Nigerian Time).



Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 26th minute, after Captain Taiwo Afolabi was fouled in the box. Peace Effiong and Harmony Chidi later found the net, with Chidi's 54th-minute strike marking her first goal of the tournament and enough for her to win the player of the match, Moshood sealed the win with her second goal in added time.

Bankole Olowookere's Flamingos have transformed into a competition powerhouse, utilizing their attacking potency and defensive resilience to impressive effect. This was evident in their tournament-opening 4-1 win against New Zealand.


The Flamingos have a storied history in the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup, participating in every edition since 2008. They achieved a breakthrough in the 2022 India edition, finishing third and overcoming their quarterfinal hurdle by defeating the USA to reach the semifinals for the first time.
